Mistake at Topeka Polling Place Could Affect Two KS House Races

A polling place in Topeka during the primary elections. (Photo by Stephen Koranda)A mix-up at a polling place in Topeka could affect the outcome of two Republican primary elections for seats in the Kansas House. Shawnee County Election Commissioner Elizabeth Ensley Deiter (DYE-ter) says a trained supervisor made a mistake and gave some voters the wrong ballots. Ensley Deiter says she’s never seen an issue like this in her 20 years as election commissioner.

Ensley Deiter says she removed the supervisor and fixed the problems, but more than 300 people had already voted. Her office is working to determine how many voters received the wrong ballots. The mistake could affect two House elections. In one race, the top finisher only won by 41 votes. The Shawnee County Board of Canvassers will consider what actions to take, if any, during a meeting on Monday.
