Lawrence Man Accused of Raping 2 Children Under Age 10

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A 39-year-old Kansas man has been charged with two counts of raping a child while they were in day care. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that William Ellis Jr. of Lawrence was charged Monday in Douglas County District Court. Prosecutors said during his first court appearance Monday afternoon that he had sex with two victims for more than a year. Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley says both child victims were under the age of 10. Ellis is being held on $500,000 bond. If convicted he faces a minimum of 40 years in prison for each count. Court records indicate he has a prior conviction of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child from 1996. It was unclear Monday afternoon if he had obtained an attorney.
