The facility at a landfill north of Topeka. (Photo from Westar Energy)This year marks the second anniversary of a program that turns trash into treasure. Well, maybe not treasure... but it does turn trash into electricity that's used in eastern Kansas. In a partnership between Westar Energy and Waste Management, methane gas from the Topeka landfill is converted into electrical power. As trash breaks down in the landfill, methane gas is produced. That gas is then collected and used to power generators. KPR’s Stephen Koranda has more.
