KU Political Scientist Says Campaign Mailers Don’t Work

Campigns continue to rely on mailers, despite research showing they have little impact.

Ahead of tomorrow's (TUE) primary election and continuing through the November general election, your mailbox is going to be jammed with those slick political mailers. The political parties and their backers spend millions of dollars on those fliers but Patrick Miller, political science professor at the University of Kansas, says research indicates those mailers don't really change many voters’ minds.

Miller says the mailers don't seem to be very effective in either getting people to the polls or changing their mind s about who will get their vote. Miller say other types of media buys seem to work better.
