KS Requesting Federal Disaster Declaration for Snowstorms

Governor Sam Brownback is requesting a federal disaster declaration for 23 counties hit by a major snowstorm in late February. Sharon Watson, with the Kansas Adjutant General’s Department, says the declaration would allow the state and communities to be reimbursed by the federal government for some repairs and expenses, including payment for workers who logged long hours during and after the storm. Watson says on the state level, that means KDOT and the Highway Patrol.

Watson says an initial tally shows the storm caused about $4.5 million in damage and expenses. She says a response from the federal government could arrive in the coming weeks.
