The Kansas House has given first-round approval to a congressional redistricting map that would split Topeka. The city would be divided so part lies in the 1st District of western Kansas and part in the 2nd District covering much of eastern Kansas. Local lawmakers have opposed the plan. But Representative Clay Aurand (“ARE-and”), a Republican from Belleville, pointed out that Lawrence was split 10 years ago.
Representative Paul Davis, of Lawrence, questioned the plan. He said redistricting guidelines say lawmakers should try to preserve the core of existing districts and keep like-minded communities together.
The House could take a final vote on the bill as soon as tomorrow (THUR).
