KS Gov's Proposal Eliminates Mortgage Tax Deduction

Budget Director Steve Anderson appears before a Senate committee (Photo by Stephen Koranda)Kansas Governor Sam Brownback wants to eliminate the state's mortgage interest tax deduction to help balance the state budget. Budget Director Steve Anderson says eliminating the mortgage interest deduction would mostly affect higher-income Kansans.

The governor's proposal would also cut personal income tax rates, and make what had been a temporary 1 percent sales tax increase permanent. Some lawmakers argue that keeping the sales tax elevated disproportionately affects low-income taxpayers.
