KS Filmmaker Examines Identity, Truth in New Film

Steve Lickteig and his birthmother, Joanie, who he grew up believing was his oldest sister. (www.opensecretflim.com)

Steve Lickteig is a native Kansan... a KU graduate,  a former news staffer for KANU radio, and now a radio producer for NPR.  At the age of 18, he learned that his adoptive parents were actually his biological grandparents. His birth mother was a woman he had always known as his sister. He's now made a documentary film telling the story of how he came to grips with this information. KPR's Laura Lorson spoke to him about making such a personal movie... and about the betrayal he felt.

Steve Lickteig (LICK-tye) is an independent filmmaker, radio reporter and senior producer of Weekend All Things Considered for NPR.  He was speaking with KPR's Laura Lorson. Lickteig will be on hand tonight (TUE) as his movie "Open Secret" is shown at the Kansas Independent Film Festival, which is going on at the Glenwood Theatres in Overland Park.
