KS Family Pins Hopes on Medical Marijuana

Ryan and Kathy Reed recently moved from Kansas to Colorado hoping that a marijuana extract legally available there will help control their son Otis's epileptic seizures. The young boy has hundreds of seizures daily and the Colorado treatment is an alternative they want to try instead of surgery to remove or detach a portion of his brain. Kansas lawmakers have shown little interest in legalizing medical marijuana though the number of other states approving it continues to grow. (Photo credit: Trevor Graff, KHI News Service)
Medical marijuana continues to be a hotly debated topic in state legislatures across the country. Missouri lawmakers recently approved a bill that legalizes its use, but only to treat children with seizure disorders. But legislation that would have legalized medical use of marijuana failed to even get a hearing from Kansas lawmakers. That has prompted some Kansas families to pack up and move to the neighboring state of Colorado. Jim McLean of the KHI News Service has the story of one such family.
