In what's become an annual rite of summer, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued blue-green algae warnings for several Kansas lakes. KDHE's Tom Langer says contact with the algae can cause health problems, so people should stay out of the water.
Langer says it's especially important that children and pets are kept away from the water. Because of their smaller body size, even limited exposure to the toxins can produce illness in kids and pets. The warnings cover four Kansas lakes, including Overland Park South Lake and Marion Reservoir in Marion County.
The warnings also include Logan City Lake in Phillips County and Memorial Park Lake, also known as Veteran's Lake, in Barton County.
