Now that the wildfires in south-central Kansas have largely been brought under control, the search is on for missing cattle. The animals scattered in all directions when grass fires burned down hundreds of miles of fencing. The county attorney in Barber County, Gaten Wood, also serves as the spokesman for emergency operations in Medicine Lodge.
Wood says so far, the cost of fighting the wildfire just in Barber County has reached one million dollars. Three other Kansas counties were also affected by the wildfires: Comanche, Harvey and Reno.

Kansas Wildfires Mostly Contained but Problems Remain
The largest wildfire in state history has largely been brought under control in south-central Kansas. Now, damage assessments are underway. Just the cost of FIGHTING the fire has reached a million dollars in Barber County alone. Gaten Wood serves as both the county attorney and the spokesman for emergency operations in Medicine Lodge. He says they have not yet calculated the total number of livestock lost to the fire.
In addition, Wood says nearly a thousand miles of barbed wire fencing will need to be replaced, just in Barber County.
