Kansas House Conservatives Push for Spending Cuts

As the state Senate considers tax hikes to help balance the budget, some House members say the legislature should be looking at more spending cuts instead. But Republican Ron Ryckman Jr. of Olathe, who chairs the House Budget Committee, says there's not enough money available in spending cuts if the state is going to satisfy all of its obligations. Ryckman says spending cuts would probably provide less than $20 million dollars in revenue.

The legislature is now almost a week past its deadline for adjournment as it grapples with the state’s estimated budget shortfall of more than $400 million dollars for the fiscal year beginning in July.
