Kansas Group Works to Set Up Consumer-Owned Insurance Co-Op

The Affordable Care Act made loans available to help launch health insurance cooperatives in each state. A Wichita group is working on developing a Kansas co-op. (Photo illustration by Jeff Davis)

It can be hard for new companies wanting to try new things to gain a foothold in the health insurance market. But a group in Kansas is out to buck the odds with help from the federal government. As Jim McLean of the KHI News Service reports, the Kansas project is part of a nationwide effort to establish a consumer-owned insurance co-op in every state.

Bryan Thompson has been KPR's Health Reporter since 2000. He's a lifelong Kansan, and a graduate of Wichita State University. He's been involved in radio news longer than he'd care to admit, serving as news director at stations in El Dorado, Liberal, and Salina before joining KPR. He and his wife, Cindy, are the parents of six outstanding children--one of whom now looks down on them from above. In his spare time, Bryan enjoys music and sports.
