Kansas Fire Marshal Urges Thanksgiving Fire Safety

The Kansas Fire Marshal advises cooks to pay close attention and, if they must leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.
The Kansas Fire Marshal advises cooks to pay close attention and, if they must leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.

This holiday weekend is a time for friends, family and food. But it’s also one of the busiest days of the year for firefighters. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, there are twice as many house fires reported on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year. Kansas Fire Marshal Kevin Doel says a lot of those fires start when people are cooking in a skillet with grease.

Doel says leaving the skillet on the stove and dumping baking soda on the flames is the best way to put out a grease fire.
