Kansas City, Kansas Police Officer Shot and Killed While Responding to Call

A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer has been fatally shot in the line of duty. Captain Robert David Melton was shot earlier this (TUE) afternoon while responding to a call about a drive-by shooting. Police say Captain Melton identified the car suspected in the shooting and tried to intercept the vehicle. That's when several  suspects bolted from the vehicle and began firing shots at the officer. Melton was hit multiple times and later died at the University of Kansas Hospital. Police say several suspects were taken into custody. Mark Holland is the mayor of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas.


This fatal shooting comes just two months after a fatal shooting involving another KCK police officer. Detective Brad Lancaster was shot and killed May 9 near the Kansas Speedway. Melton had a long history of service to his community and his country. For nearly 25 years, Melton worked in either law enforcement or the military. His service included work for the KCK Police Department, the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department and the Kansas National Guard.

KANSAS CITY, KS - Officials have confirmed that a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer - Captain Robert David Melton - has been fatally shot after responding to a disturbance earlier this (TUE) afternoon. Captain Melton responded to a call about a drive-by shooting just after 1:30 this (TUE) afternoon when he was shot while still in his patrol vehicle. The shooting happened near 22nd Street and Haskell Avenue in KCK. The officer was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital, where he died. Police say several suspects were taken into custody. KANSAS CITY, KS - Multiple news outlets in Kansas City are reporting that a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer has been shot and killed. The officer, identified as a captain, had responded to an armed disturbance call just after 1:30 this (TUE) afternoon. KCK Police Chief Terry Zeigler said the shooting happened at 22nd Street and Haskell Avenue. The officer was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital earlier this (TUE) afternoon. Police say multiple suspects are in custody. The KCK Police Department will hold a news briefing for the media at 4 o'clock this (TUE) afternoon at the KU Hospital.
