It's the coldest day of 2018, so far, anyway. Meteorologist John Woynick is keeping an eye on these frigid conditions at the National Weather Service in Topeka.
Wind chill warnings and advisories are in effect today (MON) for a vast area -- from South Texas all the way up to Canada and from Montana to New England. The brutal weather has been the most extreme in Midwestern states. Omaha's temperature low of 15 below zero (-9 Celsius) before midnight broke a record that had stood since 1884. Dangerously low temperatures have enveloped eight Midwest states including parts of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Nebraska along with nearly all of Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota. While Kansas communities contend with another day of sub-freezing temperatures, Woynick says warmer weather is expected this weekend.
Until warmer temperatures arrive, Woynick says Kansans will just have to stay inside or stay bundled-up.
