Her Land, Her Farm 1: Redefining the Farm Woman

Across the Midwest, as the population ages, the landscape of farming is subtly changing hands. One group of farmland owners is growing: widows. For example, in Iowa, women over 65 own more than a quarter of the state's farmland. And women landowners frequently face unique social and cultural challenges. In the first of a two-part series on women farmers, Harvest Public Media's Kathleen Masterson reports that women’s advocacy groups are reaching out to make sure this older generation knows its rights.

To see more stories about women farmers and to check out a video about a mother / daughter-run dairy that delivers glass-bottled milk in Kansas, visit HarvestPublicMedia – DOT- org. And join us at this same time tomorrow (WED) for the second installment of this two-part series on women farmers from Harvest Public Media.
