Sprint Lays Off Hundreds in Kansas City
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) _ Sprint Corporation says in state filings that it has given layoff notices to 829 employees at its suburban Kansas City campus in the past three months. The Kansas City Star reports the telecommunications company provided the information late Friday in a filing with the Kansas Department of Commerce.
New Topeka Superintendent Named
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The superintendent of a St. Louis area school district has been named to lead the Topeka school district. The Capital-Journal reports that the Topeka Board of Education voted Friday to hire Tiffany Anderson, superintendent of the 2,600-student Jennings School District. The Topeka Unified School District 501 has 30 schools and 14,000 students.
Salina Police Officer to Compete in Miss Kansas Pageant
SALINA, Kan. (AP) _ A Salina police officer says she hopes competing in this summer's Miss Kansas pageant will help improve the image of law enforcement officers. The Salina Journal says Katie Conn will compete in the June pageant after being one of two people chosen to advance in the Miss Santa Fe Trail pageant in Ulysses January 9th. The 23-year-old Conn became a Salina police officer in October 2014.
Schell Charged for Explosion that Injured Young Son
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A Topeka man facing charges linked to an explosion in his car that injured his 4-year-old son has pleaded not guilty and waived his preliminary hearing. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that through his attorney, Jacob Daniel Schell entered not guilty pleas on Friday in Shawnee County court to charges, including aggravated battery of the child and criminal use of explosives. Schell has been released on bond.
