KS Lawmakers Add Cell Phones to No-Call List

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas legislators have given final approval to a bill adding cellphone numbers to the state's no-call law for telephone solicitors. The House approved the measure from Attorney General Derek Schmidt on a 117-0 vote on Friday. The Senate passed the same measure last month. It now heads to Governor Sam Brownback.

KS May Legalize Charitable Raffles

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas voters are a step closer to deciding whether to legalize charitable raffles. The state House Federal and State Affairs Committee on Friday endorsed a proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution to allow charity raffles. The committee's voice vote sends the full House for debate. The Senate adopted the measure last month. The Kansas Constitution originally prohibited all forms of lotteries.

Effort Starts for Liquor by Drink in Dry County

CLAY CENTER, Kan. (AP) — The manager of a sports bar in one of a dozen dry Kansas counties has begun a campaign to allow sales of liquor by the drink. The Clay Center Dispatch reports Clay County now allows wine and mixed drinks to be served only in private clubs. Teresa Garcia, manager of Coach's Sports Grill and Pub in Clay Center, is working to change that policy.

East-Central Kansas Fire Injures Firefighter

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) — A range fire has burned about 4,000 acres in east-central Kansas, injuring one firefighter. KVOE reports the injured firefighter suffered minor burns in the blaze Thursday. Authorities say the grass fire, which also destroyed a fire truck, started in Lyon County and pushed into Osage and Coffey counties.
