Governor Brownback Defends Book Initiative

Topeka, Kan. (AP) - Gov. Sam Brownback says there is no hidden agenda in his new initiative to improve reading proficiency amoung Kansas students. The Republican governor said Friday that the only agenda is to break down barriers among various groups interested in children. The $9 million initiative will expand an afterschool program being used in southeast Kansas through Save the Children. The program will target students in poor, rural districts. Critics of the plan say using federal assistance dollars earmarked for low-income families is misguided and should be used to boost monthly assistance payments.
