(Photo by Stephen Koranda)Kansas Governor Sam Brownback thanked members of the military for their service during an event at the Statehouse today (WED). Brownback signed a proclamation designating January 23 rd as Armed Forces Appreciation Day.

Meanwhile, military officials are preparing for possible cuts in federal spending that could affect installations in the state. Lieutenant General David Perkins, the commander of Fort Leavenworth, says staff at the base are already examining where they can cut costs.

At Fort Leavenworth, training for troops that will be deployed soon is getting priority over training for troops that won’t be sent overseas.
