Fire and Rain on the High Plains: Too Much of One, Not Enough the Other

Northeastern Kansas has received some much needed rainfall in the past week or so. But it's a different story out west. Commentator Rex Buchanan says parts of western Kansas are still thirsty and in some areas... the rivers are running dry.

Commentator Rex Buchanan is director emeritus of the Kansas Geological Survey. He lives in Lawrence.

If you enjoyed this commentary, check out this article by Max McCoy, of Emporia, who produced a piece for High Plains Public Radio, an excerpt from Elevations, a book-in-progress about the Arkansas River, from the headwaters down to the plains.

Production assistance for this commentary was provided by news interns Courtney Bierman and Cameron McGough, sophomores studying journalism at the University of Kansas.
