Film Festival in Lawrence Highlights Underrepresented Voices

From the famous Cannes Film Festival, to Sundance, to Tribeca, film festivals draw fans and critics with their glitz and glamour. But two area women decided to launch a film festival with a different purpose. Sorcha Hyland and Maggie Beneke are the founders and curators of the See/Saw film festival, which gets underway tonight (FRI) in Lawrence. They are doctoral students in the KU Department of Special Education, and they were interested in bringing a group of mostly documentary films  -- focused largely on the experiences of children -- to a bigger audience. Sorcha Hyland told KPR's Laura Lorson that the idea was to show films featuring more diverse characters and subjects than can be found at the local movie theatre multiplex.

Sorcha Hyland and Maggie Beneke are the organizers of the See/Saw film festival, which begins tonight (FRI) at the Lawrence Public Library and KU's Woodruff Auditorium. They spoke with KPR's Laura Lorson. For more information on the film festival, locations and screening times, visit www.seesawfilmfest.com.
