Police: Fatal Shooting of 1-Year-Old Girl Accidental

UPDATE: Based on witness statements and evidence gathered at the scene, Lawrence police say they are calling today's (FRI) fatal shooting of a 1-year-old girl accidental.  Once the investigation is completed, reports will be forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s office for review.  Police are not releasing the name of the child at this time to protect the family's privacy.

Police responded to a residence in northern Lawrence late this (FRI) morning following a report of a shooting involving a 1-year-old child. First responders performed life saving measures, but to no avail, and the child was pronounced dead. At this time, investigators are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident in the 600 block of North Michigan Street. Authorities are not currently looking for any other persons involved in the incident. Due to the ongoing investigation, police say no further information will be released at this time.
