Earhart Memorial Bridge to Be Relocated

When a bridge is replaced, the old structure is usually torn down and sent to the scrap heap. But the Kansas Department of Transportation is hoping that the Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge in Atchison will not meet that fate. KDOT's Kim Qualls says proposals are now being sought from those who might want to relocate the historic structure.

The process is certain to be an expensive one, so 200-thousand dollars in federal highway money is available to help with relocation expenses. Complete information is available at the KDOT website, www-dot-k-s-d-o-t-dot-org. Interested parties can also call KDOT's Mike Fletcher at 785-296-0853. Sealed proposals will be accepted by KDOT until 5 pm on Friday, April 1st. A new bridge across the Missouri River that will replace the Earhart Memorial Bridge is now under construction.
