Democrat Questions Jenkins' Votes on Banking Bills

Schlingensiepen speaking to reporters in Topeka. (Photo by Stephen Koranda)Democrat Tobias Schlingensiepen (SHLING-en-zee-pen) criticized Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins today (WED) for some of her votes relating to the banking industry. Schlingensiepen, a Topeka Democrat, is challenging Jenkins for the 2 nd Congressional District seat. He says Jenkins took money from the banking and insurance industries and then voted against bills to regulate those businesses.

“In Washington, you can claim to govern an industry before lunch, and then take contributions from them over cocktails in the evening. We have to change the way business is done in Washington D.C.”

Schlingensiepen says Jenkins voted against creating a consumer protection bureau and voted against bills to protect credit card customers from some interest rate hikes. Bill Roe, with the Jenkins campaign, said Schlingensiepen is distorting the facts. Roe says most of Jenkins’ support from the financial industry has come from people working for credit unions and community banks. He says Jenkins opposed bills that overregulated small banks and other companies.

Also running in the 2nd District is Libertarian Dennis Hawver.
