Governor Sam Brownback has signed a bill authorizing a top-to-bottom review of the state’s corrections system. The bill will create a working group that will look for ways to slow prison growth and reduce the number of repeat offenders. Jeremy Barclay is with the Department of Corrections. He says there was a similar review around five years ago, but it’s time to take a look at the issues again.
The bipartisan group will include law enforcement officials, legislators and advocates for crime victims. The working group will meet for the first time next week. Group members will make recommendations for lawmakers to consider during the 2013 legislative session.
