Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos says his time at the University of Kansas was instrumental in shaping his political philosophy. Santos is a 1973 graduate of KU and was elected president of Colombia in 2010. He says he learned about the American way of life and American values while at KU.

“Your commitment to democratic values, principles like freedom, defense of human rights, and that is something that I learned to value here at the University of Kansas.”

Santos returned to speak today (MON) in Lawrence and to accept an award from KU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
