Brownback Praises “Workman-like” Efforts of Kansas Lawmakers

Republican Kansas Governor Sam Brownback today (MON) praised the work lawmakers are doing to fix a budget shortfall. Legislators have now gone into overtime. The 90 day session was supposed to end last week. Brownback says it can take multiple proposals to create a final budget and tax compromise.

“We’re going to deal with it. These things take a lot of time because you’ve got a lot of people involved, a lot of moving parts. That’s great, that’s what it ought to be, but you’re coming down to the wire getting it done,” says Brownback.
Legislators are looking at new taxes to close the budget gap. Brownback is continuing to push for increasing consumption taxes instead of reversing some business income tax cuts. The Kansas House on Friday rejected a plan that would have increased the sales tax.
