Bill Adding Details, Typeface Requirements to Kansas Abortion Forms Goes to Governor

The Kansas Senate has approved and sent to the governor a bill that requires clinics to expand the information provided to a woman seeking an abortion. The bill also specifies that the information must be printed in black 12-point, Times New Roman font.

The bill would add additional details to disclosure forms, including information about a physician’s credentials, insurance and any disciplinary actions taken against them. Supporters of the proposal, including Republican Senator Mary Pilcher-Cook, said the changes will better inform women seeking an abortion.

“Let’s use common sense. Don’t we think women have the right to know this type of information? Of course they do,” said Pilcher-Cook.

Republican Senator Barbara Bollier opposed the bill. She said this singles out abortion providers and requires a disclosure of information that's not required for other medical procedures.

“Why not? Why wouldn’t we want everyone to know and everyone to be safe? The answer is because we only want to target and harass,” said Bollier.

Governor Sam Brownback’s office would not directly say if he’d sign the bill into law.

"Governor Brownback has signed every pro-life bill to cross his desk and looks forward reviewing the Disclose Act," said spokesperson Melika Willoughby.
