May. 15,2008 05:30:PM - 07:30:PM Linda Hall Lecture Series The Kansas Cities' Levees: Their Past, Present and Future
We know what happened in New Orleans when the levees broke after Hurricane Katrina. In a city that is below sea level, the levees serve to keep the Mississippi River in its river channel and out of the city. What would happen in Kansas City if our levees were to break?
In a talk on Thursday, May 15, Paul Barber, Chief of Engineering (retired), Kansas City District and Headquarters, and David L. Combs, Chief, Planning Branch, PPM Division, Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, present the history of the settlement in the Kansas City area and why levees were needed. Included in the discussion are timing and ownership of the levees; local, state and federal involvement in flood control development in the area; and the impact of major floods. The effectiveness of various flood control facilities (levees and upstream reservoirs) will be addressed regarding the 1903, 1951 and 1993 flood events. Discussion on the impact of the changes on the Kansas River levees (authorized in 1962) on the 1993 flood is also featured. Finally, the reasons for an eighth levee being added to the system, and what is needed in the future to maintain the integrity of the levees will also be addressed. The talk, which is free and open to the public, starts at 5:30 p.m. at Linda Hall Library, 5109 Cherry.

Sep. 26,2008 07:30:PM - Alexander String Quartet and Branford Marsalis Recognized for its extraordinary interpretations of incredible composers, the Alexander String Quartet changes direction and explores classical and jazz music traditions with three-time Grammy winner Branford Marsalis on saxophone to perform Eddie Sauter's seminal work, Focus, a 1961 composition written for jazz musician Stan Getz.
Focus, in particular, capitalizes on the classical tradition of Alexander String Quartet contrasted against the jazz spontaneity of Branford Marsalis to blossom together into musical lyricism.
Commissioned by Getz to demonstrate how classical structure and the soul of the modern era are both legitimate and beautiful when brought together, Focus features Bela Bartok inspired harmonies, textures and melodic string quartet jazz material matched with improvisational saxophone music.

Oct. 10,2008 07:30:PM - Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Co. Using sound as art, multimedia images and the artifacts of activism, A Quarreling Pair is a vaudeville-structured theatre-meets-dance production that centers on questions about the world, our role and our participation in it. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company has a long history of exploring a number of charged and controversial themes through movement, music and dance.
A Quarreling Pair, the surreal and interpretive staging of a 1946 Jane Bowles puppet play by the same name, tells the story of two argumentative sisters who cannot agree about their place in the world. Feb. 4,2009 07:30:PM - The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial Entirely based on original court transcripts, L.A. Theatre Works' The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial uses the format of live in-performance radio theatre, recreated by a renowned cast of actors.
The performance dramatized the famous 1925 Tennessee v. John Scopes "Monkey Trial," which challenged the Butler Act ban on teaching evolution in public schools across the state and was the first trial to be broadcasted on the radio. Featuring actors of outstanding caliber, the cast transports the audience back to the crowded, stifling and intense courtroom in Dayton, Tenn., to experience the momentous trial as it happened.
Fast forward to today, and the same questions are before us. What is it that makes this particular branch of science so controversial? Why are we, 80 years after the famous trial, still echoing the arguments of its great orators, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan?
