A group from the 2016 Leadership Greater Topeka (LGT) class is working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Topeka to collect enough donations of supplies to fill an entire school bus.
On April 22, the bus will collect items at three locations: Wal-Mart North Topeka, Southwest Wal-Mart
(Wanamaker) and will make the last stop at the Westar Energy Pocket Park, 818 S Kansas Avenue, at 4 p.m.
Volunteers will present the supplies and monetary donations to Boys & Girls Clubs staff at the downtown
location. The event will be celebrated with staff, youth, local leaders, the Topeka High Drum Line, among others.
The public is invited to attend.
The LGT class group approached the Boys & Girls Clubs with the idea of doing a project and wanted to know
about their most urgent needs. “Program supplies,” said Dawn McWilliams, Executive Director of the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Topeka.
“People usually think about drives for supplies in the fall,” said Anya Leonard, of Leadership Greater Topeka, class
of 2016, “but the need is year-round because learning doesn’t stop when school gets out.”
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Topeka strives to provide an atmosphere that promotes education, giving the students
the motivation and encouragement they need to excel in their education. Education for many Boys & Girls Clubs
children is a year-round process and supplies are in constant need.
