May Day Peace Gala

Description: The Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice is sponsoring the 2017 May Day Peace Gala on Monday, May 1st, 2017. The Lawrence Peace Community is reclaiming May Day as a holiday for community and peace. In the first May Day celebration in the colonies Thomas Morton erected an 80 foot pine pole and distributed “other good cheare, for all commers of that day". LCPJ will begin distributing good cheer at 6:30 pm near the West Shelter of Centennial Park, 600 Rockledge Road. Dances of Universal Peace will open the program and lead us in spiritual practice in motion. Following the dances, LCPJ will dedicate Lawrence's newest Peace Pole. The six foot pole will sit in contrast to the empty Polaris Missile that is displayed in Centennial Park. Awards will be presented to Catholic Charities and to Sara Taliaferro as winners of the 2017 Tom & Anne Moore Peace & Justice Award. There will also be music, refreshments and other good cheer for children and grown-ups alike. The event is free and the public is invited to celebrate peace and have a really great time.
