Brass & Boujee

Description: A Night of of music, dance, and conversation on Black American popular music from big band jazz to hip-hop. KU Presents Brass & Boujee – A night of music, dancing, and conversation on Black American popular music from big band jazz to hip-hop. Join us in welcoming the Marcus Lewis Big Band Brass & Boujee to Lawrence for a FREE show at The Granada! This 18-piece jazz ensemble will join forces with Kansas City emcees Kemet the Phantom (The Phantastics) and Kadesh Flow to reveal a fresh and innovative fusion of Big Band jazz and Kansas City Hip-Hop. Renowned composer, arranger and trombonist Marcus Lewis will present original compositions, big band arrangements of Kemet and Kadesh's songs, and full jazz band covers of recent pop tunes such as Kendrick Lamar's "Alright." Prior to the big band performance, Marcus will provide a brief history of big band jazz to hip-hop within the context of Black American popular music, and what he is aspiring to accomplish with his latest project Brass and Boujee. While you may not recognize Marcus Lewis by name, you might have heard him in recordings or on tour with world famous artists including Janelle Monae, Bruno Mars, Prince, and Aretha Franklin, just to name a few. In addition, local Lawrence hip-hop sensation and KU alumnus Cuee will warm up the stage as the opening act and The Phantastics will follow-up the Big Band for your dancing pleasure with their original KC fusion of funk, rap, rock and soul, fronted by Kemet the Phantom and Kim “Phirst Lady” Newsome. And finally, local Lawrence DJ Approach [Sean Hunt] will close out the night. The event is co-hosted between KU Office for Diversity & Equity, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, department of African and African American Studies, the Hall Center for the Humanities, and The Granada. As a free event aimed toward building community and social consciousness during Black History month, we invite you to bring non-perishable canned goods to the concert to donate to Just Food, the Douglas County food bank who provides food to individuals experiencing food insecurity including KU students.
