Lights On Talent Show Scheduled for October 29
One-hit wonders will make their triumphant return when the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence hosts the annual Lights On Talent Show at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School in Lawrence, KS on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the free event.
Following the national celebration of Lights On Day (Oct. 22), one savvy squad from every Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence will hit the stage to showcase their dancing prowess to the theme of “One Hit Wonders.” Professional choreographers, instructors and even the University of Kansas’ Rock Chalk Dancers will make up the panel of judges. All 13 elementary school Club sites will compete for the title, each creating a three-minute boogie masterpiece for the panel to deliberate. The Teen Center crew will keep the audience captivated as the judges tally scores at the end of the night before the winner is announced.
Approximately 8,000 afterschool programs are expected to participate in the 16th annual Lights On Afterschool, holding rallies, science fairs, fun runs, student performances, community service events, sports competitions, open houses and – in Lawrence’s case – a talent show. All of these events will celebrate the afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.
Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide annual event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and is celebrated nationally with a designated Lights On Day, occurring this year on Oct. 22. More than a million people in thousands of communities across the United States and at U.S. military bases worldwide will keep the lights on this October.
