Annual Meeting & Potluck

Description: Clinton Lake Historical Society in Clinton Township will host “Women Soldiers of the Civil War,” a presentation and discussion by Aaron Barnhart on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 6pm at the Clinton Presbyterian Church, 588 N1200 Rd. Lawrence, KS. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. Contact The Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum at 785-783-4420 or wakarusavalleymuseum@gmail.com for more information. The program is made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council. This presentation is part of The Clinton Lake Historical Society’s Annual Membership Meeting. We will start the evening off at 6pm with a potluck dinner. A short business meeting and election of officers will follow. Aaron Barnhart’s presentation will highlight our evening. Bring a friend! Bring a dish to share! During the Civil War, hundreds of women cut their hair and donned men’s clothing to report for duty to Union and Confederate Army recruiters. Others served as scouts and spies or rode with their husbands and brothers in service. The presentation will explore how and why a fascinating group of women defied cultural norms to become soldiers, especially during a time when there was great emphasis on women’s and men’s separate roles in society. Aaron Barnhart, a member of the Kansas Humanities Council Speakers Bureau, presents programs around the state on history, food and culture. “Women Soldiers of the Civil War” is part of the Kansas Humanities Council’s Kansas Stories Speakers Bureau, featuring presentations and discussions that examine our shared human experience—our innovations, culture, heritage, and conflicts.
