Description: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 15, 2017 Contact: Geoff Deibel, Director of Jazz Studies, WSU 316-978-6273 2017 WICHITA JAZZ FESTIVAL: Expanded Lineup of Events + Headliner Pat Metheny The Wichita Jazz Festival (WJF), one of the longest running jazz festivals in the country, celebrates its 46th year with an expanded lineup of events, and a headlining performance by one of the most acclaimed and popular artists in contemporary jazz, guitarist Pat Metheny. This year’s Festival opens with a kick-off event at Fisch Haus on April 4th and continues with nine days of performances, talks, and other events April 8th through the 16th. Appearing are top regional, national and international jazz artists, including singer Deborah Brown, the Paris-based Kandinsky Effect, world-jazz ensemble Alaturka, and headlining this year, Pat Metheny with Martin Wind and Matt Wilson. A new coffeehouse crawl, a talk about Sun Ra and Afrofuturism with author Paul Youngquist, WJF Session Band performances with top area high school players, a Festival preview listening party, a talk about new jazz books, a Jazz Brunch, and more are featured this year. In addition, WJF is cosponsoring the annual April Fisch Haus Jazz Series and will kick off both events with a talk about Wichita Jazz Past, Present and Future on April 4th at Fisch Haus. WJF is also teaming up with the Bartlett Arboretum for a special concluding Festival concert with Wichita fusion legend Jerry Hahn on April 16th. This year WJF is also offering a new VIP Pass with front row seats and admission to a special post-concert artist reception with Pat Metheny, along with guaranteed admission and premier seating at all Festival events. A new Festival Pass offers savings and guaranteed seating at all Festival events, including special Golden Circle seating at the Metheny concert. As always, the Festival hosts a number of free events and offers special ticket rates for students. Tickets for all shows, including VIP and Festival Passes, are available on the WJF website: The Wichita Jazz Festival is honored to once again work with an amazing group of community partners, including Fisch Haus, Bartlett Arboretum, 89.1FM KMUW (which features music from Festival artists throughout March on the Night Train show), Watermark Books, Wichita Art Museum, Living Sound, Mead’s Corner, Reverie Roasters, R Coffee House, Roxy’s Downtown, the Orpheum, Mort’s Martini and Cigar Bar, and Wichita State University. Combs. Free. Saturday April 8, noon – 3pm Living Sound Walk-in Festival Preview Listening Party. Free. Sunday April 9, 11am – 2pm Wichita Art Museum Brunch at the Muse Café with a live jazz performance with the WJF Sessions Band. Monday April 10, 7pm – 10pm KMUW, Mead’s Corner, R Coffee House, Reverie Roasters WJF Coffeehouse Crawl with free music from student bands from Wichita State University, Bethel College, Hutchinson Community College, and Friends University. Tuesday April 11, 6pm – 7pm Watermark Books; 8pm – 10pm Mort’s Martini and Cigar Bar A talk and book signing with Paul Youngquist, author of A Pure Solar World: Sun Ra and the Birth of Afrofuturism at Watermark, followed by a jazz jam (21+) at Mort’s. Both free. Wednesday April 12, 8pm – 10pm Roxy’s Downtown Acclaimed world-jazz ensemble Alaturka. $10 ($5 students w/ID). Thursday April 13, 8pm – 10pm Roxy’s Downtown Paris-based contemporary jazz ensemble, The Kandinsky Effect. $10 ($5 students w/ID). Friday April 14, 9am – 5pm Wichita State University; 8pm – 10pm Roxy’s Downtown The day-long WSU Jazz Invitational with top high school and college bands in a juried competition. Free. Saturday April 15, 11:30am – 1pm Watermark; 8pm – 9:30pm – Orpheum; 9:30 – 11pm Barleycorn’s KMUW jazz host Chris Heim discusses top new books about jazz followed by a performance from the WJF Sessions Band at Watermark. THE WICHITA JAZZ FESTIVAL For 46 years, the Wichita Jazz Festival has been dedicated to fostering jazz in Wichita and supporting the next generations of Kansas jazz musicians. WJF is one of the longest running jazz festivals in the country, hosting some of the biggest names in jazz, including Clark Terry, Ray Charles, the Count Basie Orchestra, and more recently, Tierney Sutton, the Caribbean Jazz Project, and WSU alum Matt Wilson.
