John Gorka - KPR Benefit Concert
John Gorka - KPR Benefit Concert

West Side Folk is thrilled to announce that it will present two very special concerts to benefit Kansas Public Radio, which sustained very heavy budget cuts due to the cutbacks in state funding of the University of Kansas. Brother Sun and John Gorka are playing for reduced fees to do their part to help KPR, and all profits from these concerts will go to KPR.

We are thrilled to bring John Gorka back to Lawrence for the first time in nine years!

Hailing from New Jersey, but forged in the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene, he honed his craft and persona into an unmistakable image. The shy, wry, insightful, and yes, sensitive singer-songwriter has been copied and parodied. But the old coat he wove still fits and still suits him well. The old songs ring as true as they ever did, and the new ones are just as good.

Rolling Stone called him “the leading singer/songwriter of the New Folk movement” while the Boston Globe said “Gorka is widely heralded for the sophisticated intelligence and provocative originality of his songs.” The New York Times said: “Listening to John Gorka, one can get goosebumps all over. There are many reasons: fresh lyrics, a stunning emotional baritone and his twisted humor.”

Description: The quintessential backstage musical comedy classic, "42nd Street" is the song and dance fable of Broadway with an American Dream story and includes some of the greatest songs ever written, such as "We're In The Money," "Lullaby of Broadway, "Shuffle Off To Buffalo," "Dames," "I Only Have Eyes For You" and of course "42nd Street." Based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley's 1933 movie, "42nd Street" tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical "Pretty Lady." When the leading lady breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star. With a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, music by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin, this sparkling new production will be directed by co-author Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the team who staged the 2001 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival. http://www.k-state.edu/mccain/events/2016-2017/42nd-street.html The McCain box office is open weekdays 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 90 minutes before each performance. 785.532.6428 Submitted by: Todd Holmberg McCain Performance Series

Description: In a career that spans film, television and stage, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and songstress Kristin Chenoweth is perhaps best well known for her work on the ABC series Pushing Daisies, FOX’s hit comedy Glee and NBC’s political drama The West Wing. However, fans of Broadway know the “popular” Hollywood Walk of Fame performer as smash-hit Wicked’s original Glinda the Good Witch. Chenoweth is a passionate supporter of many charities and philanthropic efforts, and in 2013 she partnered with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation, establishing the Kristin Chenoweth Fund for Arts and Education. She brings her unique and powerful voice to Lawrence for a one-night-only performance of some of the most unforgettable songs from Broadway and best-loved canons of the Great American Songbook. On September 23, Chenoweth released “The Art of Elegance,” her first album of American Songbook classics via Concord Records. We sincerely apologize that due to unforeseen circumstances, the Kristin Chenoweth performance on Monday, March 6, 2017 has been rescheduled to Monday, May 8, 2017. If you already purchased tickets, they will be honored on Monday, May 8, 7:30 p.m. If you prefer, you can contact the Ticket Office about exchanging your current tickets for new ones with the corrected date information. We regret any inconvenience and truly appreciate your understanding and support. If you have any questions about the performance or ticketing, please call the Ticket Office at 785-864-2787. If you prefer a refund, please return your tickets to the Lied Center Ticket Office by April 10 on weekdays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Submitted by: Madi Schulz Lied Center of Kansas
