Description: Paper cut artist Angie Pickman, and renowned guitarist Michael Gulezian, will present an evening of art meets music March 25, 2017, at the Cider Gallery, located at 810 Pennsylvania Street in Lawrence, KS. An evening social will begin at 7:00 pm, followed by Gulezian's guitar concert at 7:30 pm. Admission is a suggested donation of $15. All ages are welcome. A cash bar will be available. The Arizona-based Gulezian is touted as one of the most highly acclaimed solo acoustic instrumental guitarists of our time, with Garrison Keillor, of A Prairie Home Companion, saying, "If I could play guitar the way Michael Gulezian does, I would just sit in front of a mirror and watch myself do it." He's been called the musical link between John Fahey and Michael Hedges. Pickman is a Lawrence, KS based artist, nationally recognized for her cut paper art that combines the art of traditional paper cutting with collage to create intricately detailed works of art and animations. She exhibits at galleries and art fairs nationally, does illustration, animation and design work, conducts public presentations on her art, and teaches various art classes and workshops. Most recently, her work has been featured in Midwest Living and Martha Stewart Living magazines, and her animation work premiered on PBS in the summer of 2016 in the documentary “Daughters of the Forest”. She calls Gulezian a friend, saying, “I have been a fan of Michael's music for many years. We’ve been working together to make an animated music video for a song off his forthcoming album. It is my great honor to be able to present my art alongside his on this one night during his current tour.A huge thank you to The Cider Gallery for making this event possible.” For more on Gulezian, visit http://www.timbrelinemusic.com For more on Pickman's work, visit http://www.ruralpearl.com Submitted by: Angie Pickman Rural Pearl Studio

Description: Michael Stern, conductor Anne Akiko Meyers, violin NIELSEN Overture to Maskarade EINOJUHANI RAUTAVAARA Fantasia (world premiere) RAVEL Tzigane SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2 At a time when Finland was under Russian domination, Sibelius’ Second Symphony was viewed as a message of hope. Today, the fiercely dramatic and ultimately triumphant work is one of Sibelius’ most-loved compositions. The sparkling overture to Danish composer Nielsen’s opera, Maskarade, sets the stage for a tale of romance and mistaken identity. American virtuoso Anne Akiko Meyers stars in not one, but two works for violin and orchestra — the world premiere of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s violin concerto, Fantasia, and Ravel’s Tzigane, inspired by vibrant Gypsy music. Tickets for this Kansas City Symphony concert start at $25. Submitted by: Beth Buchanan Kansas City Symphony
