Description: Tonight the Bookends Bookstore at 123 Main St., in Hutchinson, is hosting a Book Signing for my new book, "Refugees! A Family's Search for Freedom and a Church That Helped Them Find It". The venue will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This book is one that I (the author) chronicled near the end of the Vietnam War when the boat people were fleeing by the thousands. Our church received a family, and from the moment they walked into the airport, I began writing the story of our resettlement. The year that followed revealed many surprises, many of which were heart-rending. We were especially shocked to learn that they had left a baby there. It took 14 more years after living in the U.S., before they were able to retrieve her. The intent of this book is to give Americans, who often are immune to the horrors of war, a realistic idea of what it is like to be caught in the midst of conflict in progress. The refugees whose story is told in my book were forced to flee their country when soldiers broke into their home and beat the father very badly. Our church in Ohio resettled them, and today, they are worthy citizens of the United States. Once again, this book is a true story of refugees who fled Vietnam. I was privileged to be able to chronicle their story while our church was resettling them. - Book by Dr. Jeanne Jacoby Smith, Professor Emerita, McPherson College, KS Submitted by: Jeanne Jacoby Smith, Ed.D.
