Sports… or teams hopefully headed to the World Series! - October 10, 2014

Q: The Kansas City Royals play the Orioles in Baltimore at 7 o’clock tonight in the American League Championship Series. If KC can win four more games, they’ll play in the World Series. Technically, the Royals play their home games in Kansas City, Mo., but the team’s founder made his home in Kansas. In which city did the late team owner, Ewing Marion Kauffman, live?

A: Mission Hills, Kan.

The Kansas City Royals move on in the playoffs after eliminating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Oct. 5, 8-3, and will play the Baltimore Orioles this Friday, Oct. 10. (Flickr Photo by Dinur)The Kansas City Royals could be headed to the World Series! After a remarkable run so far in the postseason, the Royals are just four victories away from playing in Major League Baseball’s biggest game. The last time the Royals went this deep into the playoffs, they were led by Manager Dick Howser and captured the crown, winning the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985. The Royals began as an American League expansion team in 1969 by Missouri native Ewing Marion Kauffman. Kauffman, who’d made a fortune in pharmaceuticals, was also a leading Kansas City philanthropist. He lived in Mission Hills, Kan. – one of the wealthiest suburbs in America – and often flew a Royals flag in front of his mansion. Kauffman died in 1993. What had started as Royals Stadium was renamed in his honor.

Fun Factoid: According to Forbes magazine, Mission Hills is the 3rd wealthiest community in America.
