After a remarkable run so far in the postseason, the Royals are just four victories away from playing in Major League Baseball’s biggest game. The last time the Royals went this deep into the playoffs, they were led by Manager Dick Howser and captured the crown, winning the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985. The Royals began as an American League expansion team in 1969 by Missouri native Ewing Marion Kauffman. Kauffman, who’d made a fortune in pharmaceuticals, was also a leading Kansas City philanthropist. He lived in Mission Hills, Kan. – one of the wealthiest suburbs in America – and often flew a Royals flag in front of his mansion. Kauffman died in 1993. What had started as Royals Stadium was renamed in his honor. Fun Factoid: According to Forbes magazine, Mission Hills is the 3rd wealthiest community in America.
