On January 16, 1912, The University Daily Kansan became the first college daily newspaper in the state of Kansas. The not-so-daily college paper (simply called The University Kansan) had been around even before 1912 but it was a tri-weekly newspaper, making much of the news really old by the time readers got to see it. According to the website KUHistory.com, when the UDK premiered, its stated purpose was to print the news and, “…to play no favorites; to be clean; to be cheerful; to be charitable…” and “…to leave more serious problems to wiser heads.” Over the years, KU’s student newspaper has won many prestigious awards and is considered by many to be one of the nation’s finest college newspapers.
