On this edition of Conversations, Ladee Hubbard joins me to talk about her debut novel, The Talented Ribkins. Taking her title from W.E.B. Du Bois's famous essay "The Talented Tenth," Hubbard weaves the tale of the Ribkins family, who make their home in Florida. Each of the family members are blessed (or cursed, depending on your point of view) with a special, but peculiar talent. They are supernatural, but not in a mainstream superhero way. The story centers on 72-year-old Johnny Ribkin and the road trip he takes with Eloise, the 13-year-old daughter of his deceased half-brother. Along the way, she learns about her family heritage, and Johnny reevaluates his past.
